Air Conditioning Summer Cooling

 
Everyone keeps talking about air conditioning efficiency and touting their product to be the most efficient regarding energy consumption.

The analogy being is they're all talking about how to keep tyre pressure up while you have a hole in it.
It's not about volume loss but more about how the air volume is introduced into any given area with the purpose of maintaining desirable comfort levels.

Whatever system you use physical laws are involved and the best example of physics governing hot and cold in air or water is the hot water storage unit.

The cold water comes in at the bottom and the hot water out the top.

Even though the heating elements are down the bottom, the water is warmest at the top, simply because heat rises. The coolest water is always at the bottom, and the only way these separate but together volumes can mix is if they are mechanically agitated

So too with air, hot and cold volumes do not mix readily unless agitated.

That brings us to the issue of air conditioning and the manner it is installed in homes.

Now bearing in mind the cool air spreads laterally because it is more dense and therefore heavier, and warm air moves upwards being thinner and therefore lighter.

During the summer it follows that the cool air should be introduced into any given area close to floor level with the return air being uppermost.

So why is it that both delivery and return are located at ceiling level?
Ignorance and complacency by people comparing prices about which they know very little about, much like getting prices on apples and bananas with the justification that it's all fruit and therefore the same.

Big mistake!

It's cheaper to install ducted air conditioning in this manner and it's also the least efficient installation leading to higher energy consumption.
Not only is extra energy consumed in creating the cooler volume but then you need to agitate the volume as a whole in order to create a seemingly cooler environment which lasts only as long as the system is active.

People up into the mid 1900's knew this, but it seems the more enlightened of latter years have lost touch with the fundamental laws of physics.

Smart people are aware of their limitations and seek unbiased professional assistance.
The not so smart are of the opinion, a 'mate' is going to supply the information at no cost, and end up getting what they paid for.
